Brantford Breastfeeding Clinic opened its doors in February 2015, and since then we have provided assistance to many families in order to successfully guide women who are breastfeeding. The clinic operates on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is staffed by a board-certified lactation consultant who assists new mothers and babies with breastfeeding after their discharge from the hospital.
Clients may also be seen in the prenatal period to discuss infant feeding.
Joan Hepp is an experienced Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Registered Nurse. Joan provides breastfeeding support to the mother with Dr. Asim Salim.
Breastfeeding is natural and the healthiest way to feed your newborn. It provides numerous benefits both for the mother and the baby.
For mothers, breastfeeding has shown to hasten the recovery of the uterus, helping it to return to its pre-pregnancy form. It also helps to lose weight by burning over 500 additional calories per day. Research shows that mothers who breastfed have lower risks for breast cancer, ovarian cancer, uterine cancer, type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, and osteoporosis. Lactating moms receive a boost of the feel-good hormone oxytocin that helps moms feel calm and connected. It also allows moms to cope better with stress. Feeding your baby promotes bonding between baby and parents.
Breastmilk is a living fluid that changes to meet the growing nutritional needs and development of the baby. It is the most natural defense for the babies. Babies who are breastfed are less likely to have diabetes, allergies, ear infections, colds, flu, nausea, and diarrhea. It is easy to digest, so breastfed babies have less colic and fewer
digestive problems. Breast milk contains necessary components for ideal brain development.
Most women plan to breastfeed but sometimes breastfeeding is a challenge. Many moms and babies face difficulties during breastfeeding but want to continue to the best start to babies growth, development and bonding.
